Scooters are beginning to think through their actions, solve problems and understand language. They thrive on new experiences, so we provide them with a safe, nurturing environment that allows each child to develop naturally, individually and happily. Our Scooters are between 16 months and 24 months. This nine month difference means that as teachers we have to recognize the range of abilities can differ between each child.

When planning each lesson we try to vary the activities. Each day there is an art project for the class. It is a project that each child can give their own creative twist. A small muscle activity will also be offered. They may be playing with blocks or pouring and digging something out of the sensory table. A large muscle activity will also be offered. They may be playing basketball, climbing on soft blocks, or running across a sticky walk. Children learn best through play.

Everyday we also offer a group activity in which we read stories or do a variety of flannel boards. The children are learning their shapes, colors, animals, and singing their favorite nursery rhymes.

We have two main goals in the Scooter Room. The first goal is to learn how to share. As well known at this age everything is mine, mine, mine. We try teach them that they will have more fun if they share. The second goal is to learn how to be independent. We try to encourage children by doing lots of hands on activities. We also encourage children to drink without covers on their cups and to use spoons and forks.

Another part of the our room is to build the child's self esteem. We use lots of positive reinforcement and give plenty of tasks that they can do and feel proud about. It is very imporant for the child to feel proud of their work.

This is the last classroom with the 1 to 4 ratio.
